Gerald-Maria Stecker (* July 31st 1945 in Freudenthal, Czechia ; † November 11th 2018 in Augsburg, Germany)
was a German painter and designer.
Gerald-Maria Stecker was born on July 31st 1945 in Freudenthal (today Bruntal, Czechia) from Friedrich Stecker, graphic designer and painter, and Herta Stecker (nee: Ullmann), housewife. At the end of the second world war, the family moved to Augsburg in Germany where he grew up and lived most of his life. He was married to Marion Riedmiller between 1967-1993 and they had 2 children. He often lived for long periods in other countries like Portugal, Greece and Italy. The longest period abroad was in Tuscany, Italy (1985-1990).
Since 1964, after high school, Gerald-Maria Stecker started being a freelance, self-taught painter. Besides being a professional painter, he was also an architectonical and graphic designer. He participated as designer in important architectonical projects in his home town and within the state of Bavaria. He also worked as a graphic designer in brand creation and marketing in the private sector.
Especially as a young painter, he was very successful and and made many exhibitions. During his entire lifetime, although he lived
many years abroad, he remained very famous in his home town and was a renowned artist and designer in South Germany.
In 1982 he published a book with the title “A Way of Seeing” in which he develops an epistemological theory of the visual perception of the world.
As an elder man, he became always more focused on his private life and his art. His social life got limited to a small circle of friends.
The last 10 years of his life he passed in a nursing home, suffering from severe memory loss.
